Summary
MJS Transport Limited operates a fleet of powder tankers serving the transport and aggregates sectors. They take pride in keeping their vehicles clean and well maintained. As part of this commitment, the company wanted to supplement existing tanker-mounted access arrangements with a dedicated fixed access system that would provide a higher level of safety while streamlining tanker washdown operations.
IFC Inflow designed, supplied and installed a bespoke tanker access solution featuring a 7-metre Total Tanker Safety Cage (TTSC), folding stairs and a fixed access platform. The system provides safe, reliable access to tanker tops while reducing the risks associated with working at height.
Challenges
The existing washdown process relied on operators accessing tankers using the ladders and collapsible safety railings fitted to the vehicles themselves. While tanker-mounted access equipment provides a means of access when vehicles are away from site, it is intended primarily for temporary or occasional use where no safer alternative is available. Washing tanker tops is inherently risky, with operators working at height on surfaces that can become wet and slippery during cleaning operations. As MJS Transport expanded their washdown facilities, they sought a dedicated tanker access solution that would provide effective fall protection during tanker cleaning operations.
Solution
The installation incorporated a bespoke 7-metre Safety Cage system tailored to the dimensions of MJS Transport’s powder tankers. Designed to provide safe access across the full length of the tanker, the system allows operators to carry out washdown activities without the need to reposition vehicles during the cleaning process. A five-step self-levelling folding stair assembly provided safe and consistent access to the tanker tops.
To ensure simple and controlled operation, the system was equipped with pneumatic power assistance. This removed the need for operators to manually manoeuvre the larger access structure and enabled smooth deployment and retraction of both the folding stairs and safety cage.
The safety cage featured a robust three-rail design, providing fall protection throughout washdown activities. Additional support outriggers and structural bracing helped ensure stability and durability, while corrosion-resistant finishes were applied to maximise long-term performance within the demanding washdown environment.
Alongside the main tanker access system, IFC Inflow also supplied an access platform with handrail and kicker plate surround. This provided a safe working area for ancillary maintenance and operational tasks around the wash bay.
Outcome
The new installation provides operators with a dedicated access system that removes reliance on tanker-mounted ladders and railings, while delivering a higher level of fall protection during washdown activities.
The addition of pneumatic operation has reduced manual handling requirements. This helps to reduce the risk of muscular strain and injuries associated with heavy lifting and repetitive movements. Combined with the enhanced fall protection provided by the TTSC, the system supports safer washdown operations while helping to maintain high standards of workplace safety.
By investing in a purpose-built tanker access solution, MJS Transport has enhanced safety within its washdown facility and improved tanker access for ongoing fleet operations.
